Bio
Born on a sunny spring day in the North East of England, Andy Phillipson is a multi-award winning professional photographer who for the last 20 years has lived and worked in Edinburgh.
Having been originally schooled in the history and theory of art and design, his work often explores the relationship between art and photography and where possible attempts to marry the two disciplines.
The images you see here are a selection taken from Andy’s extensive archive and amongst them he hopes that you will find some moments of drama and quietude.
Much of his photographic time is spent photographing artworks in galleries and treasure filled store-rooms. He is lucky enough to have worked with most of Scotland’s finest artists and major collections and has photographed over 10,000 artworks and museum objects.
Andy is also working on personal projects both at home and abroad as well as undertaking special commissions.
When he is not behind the lens Andy loves art dogs, Frisbee and the music turned up loud, he has very little time for politicians or mayonnaise.
Andy would particularly like to thank Tom Payne without whom this beautiful website would simply not have been possible. If you would like to commission a similarly bespoke and lovely site please e-mail “tom@fullscreen.uk.com”
Additionally, Andy would like to give thanks to Debbie and Jon B for moral and technical support..
Andy would also like to thank YOU for lending your eyes…
Inspiration
Andy is in awe of :- Henri-Cartier Bresson, Sibylle Bergemann, Mark Rothko, Todd Hido, Robert Capa, Ragnar Axelsson, Steve McCurry, Piero della Francesca, Diane Arbus, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Alexander Calder, Irving Penn, Herb Ritts, Sebastiao Salgado, Spencer Tunick, Josef Koudelka, Caravaggio, Tim Flach, Nick Brandt, Sam Haskins, Anton Corbijn, Garry Fabian Miller, Gregory Crewdson, Deborah Turberville and Slinkachu amongst many others.

John Byrne
John Byrne was one of the most exceptional people I have ever met. An icon.
I look back on the days I spent photographing his artworks and breathing in his second-hand fag smoke as halcyon ones. RIP RENAISSANCE MAN!

Stirling-Smith Gallery
Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of photographing more than 500 objects from the Stirling-Smith Gallery collections. The objects you see here were taken as part of the World Cultures Project which aimed to re-appraise and digitise the Gallery’s ethnographic objects. All pictures are reproduced with the kind permission of and are copyrighted to Stirling-Smith Gallery. Many thanks to Nicola, Caroline, Heather, Angus, Ike and Roo for making everything such a pleasure.

Thomas Monckton
Thomas Monckton’s ability to transform his facial features in a seemingly endless manner was photographic gold during his 2019 Edinburgh Festival show ‘Only Bones 2.0’.
